Two 18-year old, Wellington, FL, girls were killed and an 18-year old male was injured, March 30 as their vehicle crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer, sources told a rep. The truck accidentoccurred at approximately 9:40 p.m.in Glades, FL, as the teens approached the intersection of County Road 880 from eastbound Southern Boulevard. It was at this precise moment that a tractor-trailer hauling lettuce was crossing that intersection. The teens drove into the rear corner of the semi-trailer, and the Toyota Camry rolled over and the front passenger section of the vehicle where the two teens were riding was severely damaged.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) spokesman revealed to a reporter that although the investigation into the crash is continuing, they have discerned some facts in the case. The teens were miles away from where their parents thought they were. The truck driver from Long Island did not stop at the accident scene. The 72-year old truck driver was stopped at about 10:30 p.m. in Marion County and stated that he was unaware of the accident. The FHP troopers who inspected the semi-trailer stated that marks on the trailer were consistent with damage from the crash. Troopers did state that it is possible that the truck driver did not know of the crash.

The surviving teen from Brooklyn was airlifted from the crash site to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, sources explained to a doctor. His injuries were not as severe as was originally thought.

A case of road rage may be to blame for a crash involving a car and tractor trailer which occurred Wednesday sometime before 9am on Alternate Route 7 in the town of Colonie, according to initial reports by a trooper.

Police in Staten Island say the tractor trailer, which was an empty gasoline tanker was eastbound on Alternate 7 in the passing lane. A report indicates the drivers of two cars driving in the passing lane of Alternate 7 eastbound at that time were engaging in a traffic argument involving the exchange rude gestures with their hands. The driver of the first car, which was unharmed in the accident, drove by the tractor trailer and entered the right lane in front of the truck, then began to hit his brakes, as cars ahead were moving slower.

The second car attempted to enter the right lane between the truck and the first car, with gestures again being exchanged, according to a report.

Lawyers say they and other truck driving lawyers plan to increase laws and regulations in an effort to better protect other drivers from debilitating or fatal crashes involving tractor-trailers.

In Missouri, for example, there has been a long stretch of fatal 18-wheeler accidents in the past six months. Attorneys there are advocating for stricter enforcement from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations in Missouri.

In one particular crash that was reported recently, a truck driver, who was distracted only for what he claimed was only a moment, drifted to another lane and caused a pileup of seven cars. The crash reportedly caused two deaths and several serious injuries.

The current laws and regulations that inhibit truck driver fatigue have proven to be ineffective, reports an authority . A recent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) ruling on an accident that occurred in 2008, regarding a tractor-trailer driver that had failed to notice that traffic had stopped in front of him and collided with an SUV on I-44 in Oklahoma. The semi-truck then proceeded to override three additional vehicles thereby setting off a chain reaction amongst the vehicles.

The NTSB ruled last fall that driver fatigue was the deciding factor due to the driver experiencing acute sleep loss. The NTSB further went on to add that the current federal regulations fail to address the issue of driver fatigue, a TV Station was told. The NTSB has made specific recommendations to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regarding how to address truck driver fatigue. Some of their changes include:

• Creating comprehensive fatigue management plans for commercial drivers

During their investigation of the tragic bus accident in the Bronx last weekend, investigators have learned that the bus swerved many times before overturning onto its side and skidding into a pole thereby killing fourteen people, a reporter has learned.

While many of the eyewitness accounts may vary depending on their recollection, most of them attest to the bus having swerved onto the rumble strips that are located on the shoulder of the highway multiple times before the bus crashed, a policeman was told. Rumble strips are placed on the side of the road in order to alert drivers whenever they drive near the edge of the pavement.

The bus driver has stated that the bus was clipped by a tractor-trailer, which caused him to lose control. Investigators have recovered a dash camera that was mounted on the front of the bus, as well as an engine-control module, so they may further investigate what was in front of the bus as well as the bus’ speed and other parameters to assist in their investigation. The engine-control module has been sent to a laboratory in Washington, D.C. The truck driver that is to have allegedly struck the bus has contacted the state police voluntarily and both he and his employer are cooperating with authorities. Authorities have also located both the trailer and the tractor that the bus driver alleges to have clipped the bus, and have taken them both in for analysis.

A tractor-trailer accident sent two people to the hospital and caused significant traffic delays, reported the Lawyer over the weekend. The 42-year old truck driver had reportedly dozed off and awoken as his truck was drifting from the roadway, and as he attempted to maneuver his truck back onto the road, it rolled over.

Passing motorists stopped and pulled both of the men from the vehicle, and both men were lying in the grass beside the road when first responders arrived on the scene. Both the driver and his 29-year old passenger were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and were reported to have only minor injuries. The driver and his passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The truck, it was learned, was carrying Sears-brand appliances, which did not spill from the truck during the accident. Fortunately, this was a one-vehicle accident, which could have been much worse.

The accident tied up traffic for several minutes as work crews removed the vehicle from the roadway. This task was not easy for it required workers to remove a section of the guardrail before they could remove the truck. It is unclear as to whether or not workers replaced that section of guardrail immediately or returned to replace it at a later time. It required a 12-man towing crew to remove the damaged truck.

Each year, a company publishes a collection of figures for the previous year’s accidents and collisions for Commercial Vehicles. The list also includes the stats for Tractor Trailer and Semi Truck accidents. After much anticipation, the numbers for 2010 are out, shedding light on the grim upturn in serious accidents involving commercial vehicles. During the last calendar year, accidents involving Commercial Vehicles numbered upwards of 500,000. One fifth of accidents resulted in significant injury for at least one person involved. The death rate for accidents was just at 1 percent, a markedly higher number than 2009, when only about .8 percent of collisions resulted in a fatality.

According to the source who released the numbers, these truck accidents will only increase over the coming years. The massive up-tick in accidents and collisions is a direct result of the increased number of commercial vehicles on the road. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that an increase of as much as 25 percent in the number of Commercial Vehicles on the Roadways is possible by the end of 2012.

The study pointed out that the increase presents a major problem for US traffic and criminal courts, which are already significantly backlogged with cases. He said that the extremely high number of cases which are settled out of court is a direct result of the agonizingly slow legal process involved for those in accidents. This problem is exacerbated by the notoriously long lag time required by insurance companies in Nassau and Suffolk to settle a suit.

Early in the morning in Cumberland County PA, a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel. This is the second tractor trailer truck accident of the day.

According to a witness, this happened at about mile marker 46. The truck came to a stop on the edge of an embankment and blocked the southbound lane of traffic near Exit 45.

Because of this accident the road had to be closed for over two hours this morning. It was a real pain for drivers who got detoured off of this route. They had to travel on four different roads before being able to get back on the Interstate according to police. Finally the left southbound lane opened again at about 7:30 am, as reported by a policeman. The road ended up being closed just an hour and a half later due to another truck accident.
